Makeup can be overwhelming, but makeup brushes can be even worse! I’ve seen a lot of makeup artists in action and have always been told that while the makeup is important, a good set of brushes can make a huge difference in the finished product. In the beginning when I was just starting to really get serious about makeup I thought that buying expensive brushes meant they were the best. I typically bought brushes from Mac Cosmetics. They can be very expensive. Don’t get me wrong, they are amazing brushes, but I was looking for a more affordable brush set that did the same thing. I read a lot and researched what makeup artists were using and found a company called Sigma. They are based in Minnesota and have an extensive line of makeup brushes. I ended up purchasing a kit and have been using them ever since. It’s a great product that is super reasonable! They are very similar (almost identical) to the brushes I was using before, but cost a lot less.
Different brushes will provide different applications. Synthetic-haired brushes are used for creating an “airbrushed” look. They are great for foundations, cream and blushes. Their bristles will grab less product so they are great for very pigmented (very intense) products. Natural hair brushes will be used for powder, eye shadows and blush. Keep in mind that a natural-haired brush will pick up more product. So if a color is very pigmented (very intense) I always suggest using a synthetic brush. The most important lesson ever taught to me was to BLEND! Remember those crazy blush lines people wore in the 80’s? Yeah. That’s not exactly the way to wear blush anymore. Using the right tools will help avoid this and give you a more natural appearance.
