Synopsis:
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago.
Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors–until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.
Ever the detective, Marcellus deduces what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared. And now Marcellus must use every trick his old invertebrate body can muster to unearth the truth for her before it’s too late.
Shelby Van Pelt’s debut novel is a gentle reminder that sometimes taking a hard look at the past can help uncover a future that once felt impossible.

My Thoughts:
I have to say that this is the most heartwarming book and I was so not expecting to love it as much as I did. This is about friendship, family, and connections.
Tova Sullivan has lost her husband to cancer and her son disappeared 30 years ago, after going to work, never to return again. She works the night shift at Sowell Bay Aquarium to stay busy. She forms a “friendship” and bond with the giant Pacific Octopus, Marcellus. Yes, you read that right.
The story also involves a 30 year old man named Cameron. He’s living in Sowell Bay, hoping to find out who his father is. He has no relationship with his mother (who abandoned him with his aunt when he was younger) and he’s been busy trying to figure out who his father is, but also finds himself working at the Sowell bay Aquarium.
Marcellus is the star of the show. His banter is witty and his grouchiness is hysterical.
