I’m not sure why I got out of the habit of keeping up with my book picks for the month because we all know how much I love a good book. I think I’ve been missing the discussion aspect of reading, so I’m bringing the Simply Stine Book Club back!
The Simply Stine Book Club picks for June 2020 are Pretty Things by Janelle Brown and also The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon. I chose these books because I think each has potential to be a great beach read AND because one is a mystery/thriller, while the other one is more a romance with a side of female friendships.
Now I get it. Not everyone will be able to read both books and that’s totally ok! If you’re able to read one, you can join in the the discussion for that book and save the other for late if it interests you. If you’re a badass reading machine in June and you get through both books, then obviously you can talk about both!
I plan on having a post for discussion on my Facebook page and also on my Instagram account. Maybe I’ll even do an Instagram live?!? If you have suggestions send them my way!
Pretty Things By Janelle Brown
I chose this book because the reviews are incredible! So many people that I follow on Instagram (or know in real life) have said that this is a page turner. I wanted to have one book that was a thriller type mystery for our June selectin and this felt like a great option!
The Synopsis:
Nina once bought into the idea that her fancy liberal arts degree would lead to a fulfilling career. When that dream crashed, she turned to stealing from rich kids in L.A. alongside her wily Irish boyfriend, Lachlan. Nina learned from the best: Her mother was the original con artist, hustling to give her daughter a decent childhood despite their wayward life. But when her mom gets sick, Nina puts everything on the line to help her, even if it means running her most audacious, dangerous scam yet.
Vanessa is a privileged young heiress who wanted to make her mark in the world. Instead she becomes an Instagram influencer—traveling the globe, receiving free clothes and products, and posing for pictures in exotic locales. But behind the covetable façade is a life marked by tragedy. After a broken engagement, Vanessa retreats to her family’s sprawling mountain estate, Stonehaven: a mansion of dark secrets not just from Vanessa’s past, but from that of a lost and troubled girl named Nina.
Nina’s, Vanessa’s, and Lachlan’s paths collide here, on the cold shores of Lake Tahoe, where their intertwined lives give way to a winter of aspiration and desire, duplicity and revenge.
This dazzling, twisty, mesmerizing novel showcases acclaimed author Janelle Brown at her best, as two brilliant, damaged women try to survive the greatest game of deceit and destruction they will ever play.

The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon
You guys know I love a good romance book. I’m not one bit ashamed and when I read the information for this book, I knew I HAD to read this one. I’m all for female friendships and a little bit of swooning!
The Synopsis:
Samiah Brooks never thought she would be “that” girl. But a live tweet of a horrific date just revealed the painful truth: she’s been catfished by a three-timing jerk of a boyfriend.
Suddenly Samiah-along with his two other “girlfriends,” London and Taylor-have gone viral online. Now the three new besties are making a pact to spend the next six months investing in themselves. No men and no dating.
For once Samiah is putting herself first, and that includes finally developing the app she’s always dreamed of creating. Which is the exact moment she meets the deliciously sexy Daniel Collins at work. What are the chances? But is Daniel really boyfriend material or is he maybe just a little too good to be true?
